Guide 02 · Free · Nothing gated

The free hour that changes more than the first month of any program.

Most carpet cleaning profiles are configured as though the business runs a shop. Correcting that costs nothing, takes about an hour, and reliably does more than the first month of paid work. This is the checklist, in the order that matters.

The six faults we find most

In descending order of how much damage they do. All six are free to fix and none of them requires an agency.

  • Configured as a storefront when the work happens at the customer location
  • One category only, so tile, upholstery and restoration searches never reach you
  • Service areas covering a whole state, or a single city where you drive to six
  • Hours that do not match who actually answers, especially the 24/7 claim
  • Stock photographs, or none, on a listing where a real van converts better
  • Services left empty, which is the fastest relevance gain nobody bothers with

Storefront or service area

This is the first decision and it determines everything else. Choosing wrong suppresses the listing regardless of how good the rest of it is.

A service-area business serves customers at the customer's location. That is nearly every carpet cleaner. You hide the street address, list the areas you cover, and the listing stops advertising a house nobody visits.

The exception is a genuine plant or shop where customers turn up: an in-plant rug operation with a counter, for example. If people really come to you, keep the address visible, because proximity to a real location then works in your favor.

Do not try to have both by listing a home address and also setting service areas. It is the most common configuration error in this trade, it looks like an attempt to game proximity, and it puts the listing at risk of suspension.

If you have already been suspended over this, fix the configuration before reinstating rather than after. A reinstated listing with the same fault tends to come back to the same place.

Worth knowing

Hiding the address does not reduce your reach or your ranking. It changes the listing type to the one that matches your business, which is what the system is asking for.

Categories decide what you are eligible for

Primary carries the most weight. Secondaries open entire search pools you are currently invisible in, and they cost nothing.

Primary
Set it to your highest-value core line rather than the broadest option. For most operators that is carpet cleaning service. For a restoration-led business it is not, and accepting the default here is a decision made by accident.
Secondary, for the lines you actually sell
Tile, upholstery, rug cleaning, water damage restoration. Each one makes you eligible for a search pool with its own language. Adding them takes minutes and is the single cheapest expansion available.
Do not add lines you cannot service
A category you cannot deliver produces calls you refuse, and refused calls become poor reviews. Eligibility you cannot honor is worse than no eligibility.
Services, written properly
Under each category you can list services with descriptions. Most cleaners leave this empty. Filling it in customer language, not trade language, is a fast relevance gain that almost nobody competes on.

Service areas, set to how you dispatch

The radius is a business decision that happens to live in a marketing tool. Set it from the schedule, not from ambition.

List the areas you would genuinely accept a normal residential job in. If you will drive forty minutes for commercial but fifteen for residential, publish the residential radius, because that is the promise the majority of callers are testing.

Then look at which areas inside that radius produce your best tickets. Those are the ones worth reinforcing with reviews, area content and profile services. The rest of the radius is coverage, not strategy.

Listing a whole state or twenty towns you rarely reach does not extend visibility. It dilutes the association between your business and the places you actually serve, and it generates calls you turn down.

Hours, photographs and the rest

Less strategic than categories, more decisive than most operators expect, and all of it free.

Hours. Set them to when a human answers. If you take restoration calls at night, either staff it properly or do not advertise it. A 24/7 listing that reaches voicemail at 1am produces the single most damaging review pattern in this trade.

Photographs. Your van, your equipment, your crew, your finished rooms. Not stock. Not before-and-after stain close-ups, which every competitor uses and which read as a discount operator. Real photographs of a real business convert.

Attributes and booking. Whatever applies honestly, plus a booking or contact link that works one-handed on a phone. Test it on an actual phone rather than assuming.

Consistency. Business name, address and phone identical everywhere the business already appears. After a few years of trading this is usually messier than operators expect, and cleaning it up is unglamorous and worth doing.

Then the part that never stops

Reviews. Configuration is a one-hour job. Review velocity is a permanent habit, and it is what actually separates two identically configured listings in the same suburb.

A one-hour checklist

Print it, work down it, and nothing on it costs anything.

  • Listing type set to service area, street address hidden if you clean at customer locations
  • Primary category matched to your highest-value line, chosen deliberately
  • Secondary categories added for every line you can genuinely service
  • Services filled in under each category, described in customer language
  • Service areas matching where you will actually drive for a normal job
  • Hours matching who really answers, including any emergency claim
  • At least ten of your own photographs, no stock, no stain close-ups
  • Booking or contact link tested on a real phone
  • Name, address and phone consistent everywhere the business appears
  • A review request process that fires at job completion, starting today

Questions

We will check yours for free and tell you which of the six faults you have. 424-666-2202.

Should a carpet cleaner hide their address?

If you clean at the customer location rather than yours, yes. That is what a service-area business is, and showing a home address on a profile that takes no walk-in visits is both a policy problem and a trust problem. Hiding it does not reduce your reach, it corrects the listing type.

What should my primary category be?

Carpet cleaning service for most operators, because primary category carries the most weight and should match your highest-value core line. If restoration is the majority of your revenue, that changes the answer, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than accepting whatever was picked when the listing was created.

How many service areas should I list?

Enough to cover where you will actually drive for a normal job, and no more. Listing an entire state does not extend reach. It weakens the association between your business and the places you really serve, and it produces calls you have to refuse.

Do profile posts help rankings?

Not much on their own. They occupy space in your listing, they give a reader something current to look at, and they convert. Treat them as a conversion element with a small ranking side effect rather than as a ranking tactic, and post to a seasonal plan rather than at random.

A competitor has keywords stuffed in their business name. What can I do?

File a redressal report, which sometimes works and often does not. It is not a strategy. The reliable answer is to be stronger on reviews, proximity signals and profile completeness so that a keyword-stuffed name is not enough to hold the position above you.
